Exercisers - FCE140 4 Gb/s Exerciser Test System

Exerciser Features and Controls

  • Supports all three standard Fibre Channel data rates of 1, 2 and 4 Gb/s
  • System combines functions of traffic generator, error injector (data corruptor) and BERT
  • Supports all FC topologies, including point-to-point, arbitrated loop and fabric
  • BERT statistical analysis of bit errors
  • Traffic Generator functions emulate N_, NL_, F_, FL_, E_, G_ and B_ ports in both Initiator and Target modes.
  • Error injection functions allow introduction of controlled error conditions in active Fibre links

Error Injector

The FCE140 Exerciser monitors live FC traffic and replaces, in real time, selected FC words or frames with user-defined error conditions. As one simple example, the user can replace a CRC with an invalid CRC to ensure that devices respond correctly to this type of error. In addition to simple GUI interfaces for new users, the FCE140 key functions are supported by a Programmer Development Kit (PDK) that provides extensive libraries for custom test development. For more complex or detailed testing, the FCE140 is supported by third party test developers who can provide extensive test suites that are customized to the device or application.

BERT Test

BER test functions include the ability to run industry-standard test patterns as defined by the ANSI T-11.2 committee, as well as user-defined traffic patterns. BER testing provides a simple but thorough means of ensuring data link integrity. In addition to simple GUI interfaces for new users, the FCE140 4 Gb/s Exerciser key functions are supported by a Programmer Development Kit (PDK) that provides extensive libraries for custom test development. For more complex or detailed testing, the FCE140 is supported by third party test developers who can provide extensive test suites that are customized to the device or application.

PDK-API, Programming Control

A COM Application Programming Interface (API) is available, which permits the user to operate from a user-defined program, via the same Common Object Model (COM) library used by the Graphical User Interface (GUI).  The COM API library exports interfaces to detect status, set options, and program hardware to perform various capture, trigger, exerciser, and performance operations.  An easy mode is provided for simple tasks, and an advanced mode is provided for more detailed, complex tasks.

Real-Time Performance Analysis, ChannelTrack

ChannelTrack performance analysis is a stand alone software utility for the analyzer. It can be used for monitoring the performance activity of a active FC link in real time. Metrics include link utilization, frames per second, Bytes per second, and Frame size profile, CRC errors and Illegal characters.  ChannelTrack consists of two parts, a set of hardware counters located on the FCAccess boards and a GUI the periodically reads the counters and displays the readings.

FCE140 4 Gb/s Exerciser Fibre Channel Tester

The FCE140 combines the power of a complete Fibre Channel traffic generator, an error injector (also called a "jammer" or "corruptor") and a bit error rate tester (BERT).  The FCE140 can alternate between these modes under program control.

As a traffic generator, the FCE140 generates Fibre Channel (FC) traffic which is controlled interactively or automatically. Transmission words, frames or sequences can be transmitted as a single event, or in contiguous repetitive (burst) mode.  The system is user programmable allowing simple or complex test suites to be used in verification testing, incoming inspection and compliance testing.

When functioning as an error injector, the FCE140 monitors live FC traffic and replaces, in real time, selected FC words or frames with user-defined error conditions.  As one simple example, the user can replace a CRC with an invalid CRC to ensure that devices respond correctly to this type of error.

BER test functions include the ability to run industry-standard test patterns as defined by the ANSI T-11.2 committee, as well as user-defined traffic patterns. BER testing provides a simple but thorough means of ensuring data link integrity

SanAlytics

SanAlytics relieves the burden of sifting through large trace files by automatically processing captured data from the leading analyzer vendors and presenting results in easy to understand graphs and tables. SanAlytics can pay for itself instantly by quickly diagnosing problems, optimizing the use of valuable engineering resource and increasing network performance and uptime. SanAlytics can provide simple counts of network events through to detailed expert analysis of the context in which these events occur. Clear and concise fault messages indicate problem areas and permit the user to jump to the location in the trace file where the problem occurs. SanAlytics not only identifies simple anomalies such as CRC errors or rejected frames, but also finds more complex issues such as retransmissions, flow control problems, missing acknowledgments and timing issues. SanAlytics is aware of the various state machines used within the protocol stack and ensures that conversations between devices conform to the rules of the state machine. Violations of the state machine generate fault messages that are presented to the user.

SanAlytics features include:

  • User State Machine concept
  •  Identifies faults and potential trouble areas
  •  Monitors buffer credit and exchange processing
  • Topology Graphs
  • FCP protocol checking detect data under/over run
  • Can be customized by user
